The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is the most famous of the Canadian Gold coins. First issued in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint, it was initially minted in 99.9% pure gold. The only other pure gold bullion coins being minted at that time were the South African Krugerrands. The purity and weight of each Gold Maple Leaf coin are guaranteed by the Canadian Government. Originally founded in Ottawa in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint produces all of Canada’s circulation coins, including some circulation coins of other nations. In order to boost its production capacity, the RCM opened a second facility in Winnipeg in the 1980’s.
The obverse of the 1981 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin features the right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II. This profile is a depiction of Her Majesty at 39 years of age. The obverse of all Canadian coinage since Queen Elizabeth II’s rise to the throne of the UK in 1952 has depicted various age-appropriate profiles of Her Majesty.
The reverse of the 1981 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin features the Maple Leaf. The Maple Leaf is a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians and is considered the unofficial emblem of Canada. Created for the RCM in 1979 by master engraver Walter Ott, this Maple Leaf design has been used on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins.
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins have been issued annually ever since their introduction in 1979. For the first 4 years, the Gold Maple Leaf coins were minted with a gold purity of 99.9%. In November 1982, the RCM increased the coin’s gold purity to 99.99%. This elevated the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin to the status of the first bullion coin to be minted in such high gold purity. The Gold Maple Leaf coin is the standard by which other 24-karat gold bullion coins are gauged.
During their first 4 years of issuance, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins were available in only the 1 oz denomination. In November 1982, along with the increase in their gold purity, the RCM began issuing the Gold Maple Leaf coins in additional weights. First were the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz weights. In 1986, these were joined by the 1/2 oz weight, and in 1993, by the 1/20 oz weight. In 1994, the RCM issued a 1/15 oz weight that was issued only this 1 year. In 2014, a 1 gram weight was added. Each Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin has a stated face value in Canadian Dollars and is considered legal tender.
