The Snake is the symbolic beast that occupies the sixth position in the Chinese zodiac. In a myth that explains this order of precedence, a race was held to cross a great river to determine the numerical placement of each animal of the zodiac in a lunar year cycle. Snake’s tactic involved cleverness and guile to compensate for not being the fastest swimmer: it hitched a ride on Horse’s hoof and then leaped out and frightened them at the finish line, edging them out for the sixth place. Those born in the Year of the Snake are believed to have wisdom, intellectual strength, and perhaps a sense of the supernatural.
