Australian Silver Koala coins are similar to many other silver bullion coin programs struck around the globe. In the case of Perth Mint coins, reverse imagery is changed every year to generate greater interest and demand. While the overall motif is always the koala and its natural environment, the specific depictions change each year.

The Perth Mint is altering the Australian Silver Koala coin series this year, focusing on the two sizes that appear to be favored by investors and collectors. To date, the Mint only plans to strike the coins in a 1 oz weight and this 1 Kilo weight. Traditionally, Perth Mint also produced ½ oz and 10 oz coins in this program.

On the reverse of the all-new 2016 1 oz Australian Silver Koala is the latest depiction of the cuddly, yet feisty marsupial. In the 2016 image, a single adult is featured walking along the branch of a tree on all fours. “Australian Koala” is engraved above, with the coin’s year of minting, weight, purity, and metal content below.

The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II’s right-profile portrait as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998. Her image is surrounded by engravings that include her name, the nation of issue, and the coin’s face value.

Perth Mint was founded by the British Royal Mint in 1898, just four years before Australia’s six states filed formal federation paperwork. The Perth Mint, the last surviving Royal Mint facility in Australia, passed to Australian control in 1970 when the government of Western Australia assumed control.
