2018 1 Kilo Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin (BU)

There is no coin more sought after from the Perth Mint than the Australian Silver Kookaburra. The coins in this series are available annually from the mint and were first released in 1990. Today, there is a major change coming to the Silver Kookaburra with the introduction of .9999 pure silver content in the series for the first time. Right now, the 2018 1 Kilo Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin is available to purchase online.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in an individual plastic capsule.
  • 28th design released for the Australian Silver Kookaburra!
  • Contains 1 Kilo (32.15 Troy oz) of .9999 pure silver in BU condition.
  • Bears a face value of $30 (AUD) backed by the federal government of Australia.
  • The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse.
  • An all-new Kookaburra design with the bird in flight on a moonlit night is on the reverse.

Each 2018 1 Kilo Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin listed here is available in BU condition. Coins in BU condition exhibit no signs of wear and tear, but it is possible for the coining process to result in minor flaws. These flaws are limited to breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.

The Australian Silver Kookaburra coin is usually a trendsetter for the Perth Mint, but this time it is following the lead of another coin. The 2016 Australian Silver Kangaroo’s debut with .9999 pure silver made it the first major bullion coin with .9999 pure silver content. Now the Silver Kookaburra is upgraded to feature the highest purity of silver content for 2018.

When Perth Mint issues an “unlimited mintage” status for a coin, it doesn’t mean they’ll be struck forever. The coins will be struck to meet demand through the end of the calendar year on the date of issue. In this case, through the end of 2018.

The reverse of the 2018 1 Kilo Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin includes the newest kookaburra design. The kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher species, and in this design it is shown taking flight on a moonlit night with a large, detailed moon rising into the sky in the background.

On the obverse of all Silver Kookaburra coins you’ll find the image of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen’s effigy has appeared on Australian coinage throughout her reign, with the portrait updated to reflect her age at various stages. This particular effigy is the fourth-generation design created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.

Perth Mint is the oldest operating facility in Australia. It is owned by the state government of Western Australia, and operates independent of the sovereign Royal Australian Mint.
