A three-man crew consisting of Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, and Neil Armstrong lifted off from Cape Canaveral on Merritt Island, Florida, on July 16, 1969. Powered by a Saturn V rocket, the Apollo 11 craft would near the moon four days later.

On July 20^th, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the surface of the moon in the Eagle lunar lander. Six hours after successful touchdown on the surface of the celestial body, Armstrong and Aldrin emerged from the capsule to walk the surface of the moon and plant an American flag on its surface. Though the American flag was planted, the crew viewed it as an accomplishment for all nations in saying “We Come in Peace for All Mankind.”
