In 1990, the Perth Mint charted a new path forward with its bullion coin collections. Prior to the introduction of the Australian Silver Kookaburra, the mint had issued gold bullion coins in the Australian Nugget Series and platinum coins in an Australian Platypus Series.
Starting in 1990, Perth Mint would focus its major bullion coin programs on native wildlife and plant species. The introduction of the Australian Kookaburra coincided with a rebranding of the Australian Nugget Series as the Australian Kangaroo. Subsequent programs include the Australian Koala, Australian Wedge Tail Eagle, the Australian Emu, and others.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse side of 1 Kilo Australian Silver Kookaburra Coins. This depiction is the sixth to grace Australian coins and was created in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint. It shows the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem.
In the reverse design of the 2022 Australian Silver Kookaburra Coin, Perth Mint offers artwork from Natasha Muhl. This design shows a small kookaburra on the ledge of a bird bath in a quaint garden in Australia.
