William Wyon developed a new design for the 5 Pound sterling British gold coin in 1839 to honor the 1837 ascension of Queen Victoria to the throne of England. He reimagined the Queen as Una from the classic Edmund Spenser poem, “The Faerie Queene.” The design was one-of-a-kind and marked the first time a British monarch had been depicted in a fictional manner.

“The Faerie Queene” is an allegorical epic that operates on multiple levels of meaning. Each character, setting, and event in the poem carries symbolic significance, representing abstract virtues, vices, or political concepts. For example, the Faerie Queene herself represents Queen Elizabeth I, in the original poem, while characters like the Redcrosse Knight embody virtues like Holiness.

On the obverse of 2024 Una and the Lion Silver Bars, you’ll find a unique depiction of Una and the Lion. In this design, the two are locked in a gentle embrace as Una extends her hands to hold the head of the lion while lowering her head to rest on his. The mighty lion remains steadfast and watchful as Una rests her head on his.

The reverse side of 100 oz Una and the Lion Silver Bars features the identifying hallmarks of the piece. This side also includes an engraving from Wyon’s original 1839 coin design. The Latin phrase DIRIGIT DEUS GRESSUS MEOS was found on the 1839 coin and translates to English as MAY GOD DIRECT MY STEPS.

These 2024 100 oz Una and the Lion Silver Bars are available with individual cardboard boxes. The 100 oz silver bar is the largest issue in this series and has the lowest mintage, with just 300 bars available to investors and collectors.
