The African Wildlife Series began with the Zambia Elephant in 1999 and has since expanded. Since 2004, Somalia has issued the African Elephant coins annually. The series features both gold and silver coins, primarily available in 1 oz silver and larger weights, including a notable 1 kilo silver coin. The African bush elephant is the largest living terrestrial animal on Earth. These magnificent creatures can reach heights of up to 13 feet at the shoulder and weigh as much as 13,000 pounds. Their imposing size is a testament to their role as a keystone species in African ecosystems, shaping the landscape and influencing the lives of countless other animals.

The obverse of the 2025 Somalia Gold Elephants features the coat of arms of Somalia. In the design of the Somali national seal, you’ll find a crowned shield with a single star at the center set against a background of horizontal lines. The shield is supported on each side by a leopard with crossed spears beneath the shield.

On the reverse of 2025 1/2 oz Gold Elephant Coins, you’ll find the new image of an African bush elephant for this issue. In this year’s design, a massive bush elephant is shown marching toward the viewer across the savanna. The elephant’s large frame dominates the design field with a lone tree visible in the distance and the sun rising into the sky overhead.
