The sugar maple leaf has become so deeply ingrained in Canadian identity that it transcends its botanical origins. The leaf is now seen as a symbol of Canadian pride, resilience, and connection to the natural world. Much like the maple tree itself, which can survive harsh Canadian winters, the maple leaf has come to represent the strength and perseverance of the Canadian people. When displayed prominently, the leaf evokes a sense of national unity and shared experience that resonates with Canadians from all walks of life.
King Charles III is on the obverse of 2025 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins. This portrait of the monarch is the first of Charles III on Canadian coins. Steven Rosati, the artist, is only the third Canadian artist to create a monarch portrait of Canadian coins.
The sugar maple leaf is found on the reverse side of the 2025 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf. Walter Ott created this image of the sugar maple in 1979 for the debut of the gold coins. It has persisted on all weights in the series since 1979, and also features on silver, platinum, and palladium variants of the coin.
