The 1982 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin obverse spotlights a right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II as she looked at 39 years of age. Since ascending to the throne in 1952, Her Majesty has appeared on the obverse of all Canadian coinage. In 1990, the RCM updated her profile to reflect Her Majesty as she looked at 64 years of age, and in 2005, they updated it again to reflect Her Majesty as she looked at 79 years of age.
The 1982 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin reverse features Canada’s beloved Maple Leaf. This design has remained almost unchanged since its initial introduction. The Maple Leaf is a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians. Master engraver Walter Ott created the Maple Leaf design in 1979 and it has been used on all versions of Canadian Maple Leaf coins.
Since their introduction in 1979, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins have been issued annually. The coins were initially minted with a gold purity of 99.9%. The RCM increased the coin’s gold purity to 99.99% in November 1982. This made the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin the first bullion coin to be minted at such a high level of gold purity. Due to their constant design and mintage history, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin has been identified as the standard for other 24-karat gold bullion coins.
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins were initially available in only the 1 oz denomination. Along with the increase in their gold purity, in November 1982, the RCM began issuing the Gold Maple Leaf coins in additional weights. The 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz weights were the first to be added. They were later joined by the 1/2 oz weight in 1986 and by the 1/20 oz weight in 1993. A 1/15 oz weight was issued only in 1994. Then a 1 gram weight was added in 2014. Considered to be legal tender, each Gold Maple Leaf coin has its stated face value in Canadian Dollars.
The Royal Canadian Mint, which was founded in Ottawa in 1908, produces all of Canada’s circulation coins as well as some circulation coins of other nations. To boost its production capacity, the RCM opened a second facility in Winnipeg in the 1980s.
