The Royal Canadian Mint produces all of Canada’s circulation coins. It was founded in Ottawa in 1908. At least partially due to the overwhelming popularity of the Maple Leaf coins, the RCM opened a second production facility in Winnipeg in the 1980s to bolster its production capacity.
A right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of the 1989 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin. This profile depicts Her Majesty at 39 years of age. Later years of Maple Leaf coins had updated versions of the Queen’s profile, one depicting Her Majesty at 64 years of age and another at 79 years of age. Since ascending to the throne in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has been featured on the obverse of all Canadian coinage.
The Maple Leaf adorns the reverse of the 1989 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin. This design was created by master engraver Walter Ott, and has remained mostly unchanged since 1979. This design can be seen on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins. For Canadians, the Maple Leaf is a symbol of pride and nationalism.
The Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin in 1979 with a gold purity of 99.9%. Four years later, the RCM made a historical move, increasing the gold purity of the coin to 99.99%. This made the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf the first bullion coin to be struck at this high level of gold purity. As such, the Gold Maple Leaf coin is regarded as the standard by which other 24-karat gold bullion coins are rated. They are legal tender.
The Royal Canadian Mint initially made the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin available in only the 1 oz gold weight. At various points in the series, the RCM added additional weights to the collection. The Gold Maple Leaf coins were available in 4 different weights in 1989 – 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. Subsequent years saw the addition of 1/20 oz and 1 gram weights. However, the 1 oz denomination has been the most famous and best-selling weight. Each Gold Maple Leaf coin has its face value stated in Canadian Dollars.
