In its 4th year, the obverse of the American Gold Buffalo coin continues to feature the profile of a Native American Chief. Profiles of Chief Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota, Chief John Big Tree of the Kiowa, and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne are considered to be the basis for this Native American Chief profile. James Earle Fraser originally created this profile for the Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel, which circulated from 1913 to 1938. Considered to be among the best designs of any US coin, the Buffalo Nickel obverse design was chosen for the American Gold Buffalo.
The reverse of the American Gold Buffalo coin continues to feature the profile of an American Buffalo. The massive Black Diamond of the Central Park Zoo, believed to be the largest American buffalo ever held in captivity at the time, is felt to be the basis for the American Buffalo profile. This design, originally created by James Earle Fraser for the Buffalo Nickel, was chosen for the American Gold Buffalo due to its beauty and popularity.
The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 mandated the production of a one ounce .9999 pure gold bullion coin with limited mintage. The American Gold Buffalo Coin series, which was the first time the US government had produced 24 karat gold coins, was created to compete with foreign countries and their 24 karat gold coins. Many investors preferred .9999 pure gold coins, like the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf and the Chinese Gold Panda. The American Gold Buffalo coins put the US into the .9999 pure gold market.
The 2008 suspension of production of the American Gold Buffalo coins carried over into 2009. The 2009 Gold Buffalo bullion coins were not made available for purchase until October 15, 2009. Due to the resulting pent-up demand for them, sales were so brisk from the start that by December 4, 2009 – less than 2 months – the US Mint had sold its entire inventory of 200,000 coins.
