The Australian Gold Nugget series began in 1986 as a means of promoting Australia’s vast gold reserves and the historical gold rushes that populated the western half of the Australian continent. With the Silver Kookaburra’s introduction, however, the program changed to the Australian Gold Kangaroo to bring it in line with annual release plans featuring native creatures.

This particular design is the fourth-generation effigy created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
