The American Gold Eagle coin debuted from the United States Mint in 1986. The coins were originally available in all four weights in bullion, and just the 1 oz weight in proof. On the obverse of the 2017 1 oz American Gold Eagle is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ image of Liberty. Created in 1907, it was originally used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle through 1933. The final issue of those coins have become so rare, that one recently sold for nearly $9 million.
The reverse of the American Gold Eagle bears a design of the American bald eagle from sculptor and artist Miley Busiek. Her creation includes a male bald eagle flying over the nest, where a group of hatchlings rests under the attentive eye of a female eagle.
