The obverse of the coin has an image of Europa riding on the back of a bull. The Greek myth says that Zeus disguised himself as a bull to get close to Europa. This may have been for various reasons, including tricking both Hera, his jealous wife, and Europa’s father. Once Europa was comfortable enough with the tame bull to climb on its back, Zeus ran off in bull form and swam across the sea, abducting Europa to Crete. Europa is mentioned in numerous historical Greek works, including the Iliad. Herodotus, a Greek historian, has a more rational explanation for how Europa ended up in Crete and married to a king of that island: he notes that Cretans may have kidnapped her in response to a kidnapping of another Greek woman. Below the image on the obverse are inscriptions detailing the metal weight and purity of the 1 kilo bar as well as a serial number.
The reverse of the 2022 Tokelau Goddess Europa Silver Coin includes the right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The image, which was created by Ian Rank-Broadley, is shown on this bar coin much like it would appear on a round one. Even the inscriptions spelling out the queen’s name and the country, year and denomination of the coin are wrapped in a circle around the portrait.
