George T. Morgan‘s Lady Liberty design for the Morgan Silver Dollar, first minted in 1878, represented a significant departure from previous depictions of Liberty on American coinage. Rather than following the classical Greco-Roman style that had dominated before, Morgan chose to create a distinctly American version of Liberty, using Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams as his model.
