Proof American Gold Eagle coins debuted in 1986 with only the 1 oz coin available in the collectible range. In 1987, the US Mint added the 1/2 oz gold coin, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988. The 1 oz coin owns the two highest mintage figures in the proof program’s history at 446,290 coins in 1986 and 147,498 coins in 1987.
However, the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle was outsold by the 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagle from the latter’s introduction in 1988 until 2008. In the decade encompassing 2008-2018, the 1 oz collectible version of the Gold Eagle reestablished itself as the leading coin, but is still closely matched in annual demand by the 1/10 oz coin. The two lowest mintage figures for the 1 oz version came in 2012 with 23,630 coins issued and 2001 with 24,555 coins issued. No 2009 coins exist as the US Mint halted production that year.
On the obverse of 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins is the image of Lady Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens of the $20 Gold Double Eagle. The reverse includes a family of bald eagles and their nest, and was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek.
All of these 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins earned PR70 certifications from the PCGS. Coins in this condition are considered perfect and have full, original mint luster with no detracting flaws present. The DCAM label included indicates the coins have strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear backgrounds.
JM Bullion cannot guarantee the date mark of the coin you receive or the possibility of additional labels from the PCGS. All coins are chosen at random. Also, we cannot hand pick separate date marks if you buy more than one coin.
