The 1987 release of the American Silver Eagle was one of the most significant issues in the first two decades of availability for the Silver Eagle. Though not the debut coin that launched the series, the 1987 coin does hold the distinction of having the original record mintage level. After a strong start in 1986, the 1 oz Silver Eagle exploded to 11.442 million coins sold in 1987. This was more than double the sales of the debut 1986 Silver Eagle.

The obverse of the 1987 1 oz Silver Eagle includes the historic Walking Liberty effigy. Designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, this leftfacing portrait of Liberty captures her full-length figure walking toward the sun on the horizon. She is draped in the American flag and walks with her right hand extended as her left hand carries branches of oak and laurel.

On the reverse of 1987 American Silver Eagles, you will find John Mercanti’s depiction of the heraldic eagle. Designed for this series in 1986, it is a modern twist on a design that dates back to the 1790s and Robert Scot, the 1st Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. This front-facing bald eagle supports a US national shield while clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. There is a triangular cluster of 13 stars above the head of the eagle.
