Each 2018 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coin in this listing is available in BU condition. These flaws range from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks.
The American Gold Buffalo coin followed the lead of the American Eagle Series in using former circulation coin designs from the golden age of American coining in the early 20th century. For the Gold Buffalo, James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel design was chosen. Fraser, a native of Winona, Minnesota, looked to the plains and prairies of the Upper Midwest for design inspiration.
Buffalo Nickel coins featured a portrait of an American Indian leader on one side, and the image of an American bison on the other. The change to the nickel design was authorized by President William Howard Taft’s administration, and Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel was in circulation from 1913 to 1938.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coin you’ll find the right-profile portrait of the tribal leader. It is said Fraser used the facial features of three different American Indian leaders of the 19th and 20th century for inspiration in his design. Engravings include the word “Liberty,” the year of issue, and Fraser’s last name initial of “F.”
The reverse of all American Gold Buffalo coins includes the left-side image of a bison. It is depicted standing on a mound of dirt and grass, with engravings around that include the nation of issue, national motto, weight, purity, metal content, and the face value. Inspiration for the bison is believed to have come from Black Diamond, a resident bison of the Central Park Zoo at the time.
