The American Plains bison (Bison bison bison) is a massive animal. Adult males, called bulls, can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand around 6 feet tall at the shoulder. Females, called cows, are slightly smaller, weighing around 1,000 pounds. Plains bison have large, heavily-built heads with short, curved horns that can grow up to 2 feet long. The horns are used for defense and display during mating season. They also have a thick beard beneath their chin and a shaggy forelock of hair on their heads.

On the obverse of Sunshine Buffalo Silver Rounds, you will find a depiction of an indigenous American figure. This portrait is based on James Earle Fraser’s 1913 design for the Buffalo Nickel. Fraser used the physical features of three different indigenous leaders of the early 20^th century as inspiration for his portrait of a stoic figure.

The reverse of 1 oz Buffalo Silver Rounds from Sunshine includes a depiction of the American bison. Plains bison are well-adapted to the harsh winters of the North American prairies. They have a thick, woolly undercoat covered by longer, coarse guard hairs that can reach up to 20 inches in length. They also have a distinctive shoulder hump, which is a large muscle mass used for swinging their massive heads from side to side to clear away snow. At the center of the reverse is the SMI MintMark feature.
