In Aboriginal Australian culture, koalas hold spiritual significance. They are often depicted in Dreamtime stories and are considered symbols of wisdom and connection to the land. Unfortunately, koalas were hunted extensively for their fur during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leading to a significant decline in their population. Conservation efforts, including habitat protection and anti-poaching laws, have helped stabilize their numbers, but they remain vulnerable to habitat loss and disease.

All 2024 1 Kilo Australian Silver Koala Coins available here are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins are individually encapsulated and come with a unique P125 mint mark on the reverse in honor of Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary. Additionally, the coins have a micro-laser engraved security element on the reverse that is only visible with the aid of magnification.

On the obverse of 2024 Australian Silver Koalas, you will find King Charles III’s debut portrait on Australian coins. Created by Dan Thorne, this left-profile relief depicts the new king without a crown and wearing a suit. This is the first-ever Charles III portrait for Perth Mint and his first appearance in the Silver Koala Series.

The reverse side of 2024 1 Kilo Silver Koala Coins comes with a design from Ing Ing Jong. In this image, the koala clings to the trunk of a gum tree. Despite conservation efforts, koalas face ongoing threats, including habitat destruction due to urbanization, deforestation, and wildfires. Climate change also poses a significant risk, as rising temperatures and changes in weather patterns can affect the distribution and abundance of eucalyptus trees, their primary food source.
