The obverse of the 2025 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin features James Earle Fraser’s famous portrait of an indigenous American. The image is a composite portrait of three Native American chiefs: Iron Tail (Sioux), Two Moons (Cheyenne), and John Big Tree (Seneca). The profile’s strong features and dignified expression became instantly recognizable and have since been regarded as one of the most striking portraits on U.S. coinage.

On the reverse of 2025 American Gold Buffalos, you’ll find the other image designed by Fraser. The model for this side was reportedly Black Diamond, a bison living in New York’s Central Park Zoo at the time. The powerful stance of the buffalo, standing on a mound, embodied the rugged spirit of the American West and the nation’s natural heritage. This imagery resonated strongly with the American public, contributing to the enduring popularity of the original Buffalo Nickel.

Fraser’s designs for the Buffalo Nickel, the inspiration for the Gold Buffalo, represented a departure from the more formal, neoclassical style that had dominated American coin design in previous decades.
