The Aztec sun stone was discovered in 1790 during repairs of the Mexico City Cathedral. It is now housed in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City. Measuring 12 feet in diameter and 39 inches thick, it’s regarded as one of the most famous pieces of Mexica sculpture. Believed to have been created between 1502 and 1520, this sun stone still doesn’t have a clear meaning as many scholars and archaeologists are still interpreting and making sense of the stone’s complex nature.

The obverse and reverse of each 1 Kilo Sun Stone Silver Stacker feature the same sun stone design. The design is a replica of the exact Aztec sun stone that was unearthed in 1790. While the central image on the sun stone remains unknown, most believe the center features the face of the solar deity, Tonatiuh. The face of the deity is encased in the symbol of movement, known as Ōllin. The central ring features 20 glyphs representing the 20 days of the Aztec calendar. The other border is wrapped by two fire serpents. Inscriptions are placed on the edge of the stacker.
